| Current Exhibition Lars Stenberg Until 30 September 2010 To view more images of this exhibition, please click on the above image. Lars’s paintings are of the Goldfields region, particularly the bush near Maldon and around his home in Ballarat. A keen bushwalker, Lars’s paintings evoke the patterns of the Victorian landscape that he tramps through. Lars says, “Traditionally, landscape painting is a stationary activity. With few exceptions, when an artist went to paint the landscape they would sit still and sort of glare at the scenery. Most of my time outdoors is spent moving around, and I try to capture the feeling of moving through the bush: the shifting viewpoints, the seen-and-not-seen quality of the view through trees as you follow a track.” The title of this exhibition, Broken Ground, refers both to Lars’s development as a painter and to the topography of the former goldmining areas. Lars says, “The goldfields were a clear focus for this exhibition, and I am happy with the developments in my work. I felt that I had broken new ground… and of course, I was painting the broken ground of the goldfields.” Lars’s use of colour, gesture and rhythm is a response to the emotions evoked by being in a landscape that is so full of stories. “What I love about the Goldfields is that the stories of the thousands of people who laboured here are written in the landscape. The buildings, tents and other structures are long gone but the marks on the country remain.” If you would like to be on the gallery mailing list, send us an email: info@pennyschoolgallery.com.au
